Parks & Recreation Commission Meeting
Parks & Recreation Meeting
Mt Zion Parks & Recreation Commission
Minutes
October 25, 2011
The meeting of the Parks & Recreation Commission was called to order by Kent Hadden Chairperson, Parks & Recreation Commission at 5:20 p.m. Roll call was taken; commissioners in attendance were JC Nashland, Bob Long, Renee’ Wendell, Mike Vannoy, and Bob Swartz. Also in attendance was Village Trustee Donna Scales and Director of Parks & Recreation Judy Roessler.
Minutes: Minutes from the July 26, 2011 meeting were approved on a motion by Bob Swartz and second by Bob Long. Motion carried.
Public Forum: No one was in attendance
Old Business: The commission was updated on progress in Fletcher Park. There have been 29 rentals of the building in Fletcher from May 2011 until November 2011. Rentals included birthday parties, weddings, meetings, bridal and baby showers, and anniversary parties. The toppers are up on the playground equipment and the small shelters are being built this week. Additional landscaping has been contracted for the tennis courts and is paid for by donations. The school house will be worked on this winter with hopes of opening it to the public by at least next fall. I will advertise for donations for items for the school house when it gets close to time to move things in. An open house was suggested for the school house with maybe an old car show in conjunction with it.
Other items that need to be purchased are trees, playground equipment and lights for the park. Renee’ Wendell ask if we had checked into solar lights for the park. I will check into lighting and cost since it’s been a couple of years since a cost has been looked at. There has been no vandalism at the park so far and the renters have been taking care of the buildings. A suggestion was made to purchase a cheap vacuum for renters to use in the recreation center instead of leaving out the cleaners vacuum.
New Business: The recreation department’s winter/spring class schedule was reviewed. Classes will include tumbling, craft classes, Santa letters, and programs with the Mt. Zion District Library.
Non-agenda Items: the Village Calendar with the schedule for the 2012 Parks & Recreation Commission meetings was given to the commissioners.
Commissioner’s Items: JC Nashland suggested that we contact Rural King to purchase end of the season trees for the parks. We can look into the trees after reviewing the landscaping plan and seeing what type of trees we are still looking for. Mike Vannoy updated us on the vandalism problems they have been having at Spitler Woods.
Adjournment: The meeting was adjourned at 6:10 pm on a motion by JC Nashland and second by Renee’ Wendell.
