Village of Mt. Zion
Parks & Recreation Commission Meeting

Mt Zion Parks & Recreation Commission

Mt Zion Parks & Recreation Commission

Minutes

                                                                July 26, 2011

The meeting of the Parks & Recreation Commission was called to order by Parks & Recreation Director, Judy Roessler at 5:25 p.m. Roll call was taken; commissioners in attendance were JC Nashland, Carlin Koester, Mike Vannoy, and Bob Swartz.   Also in attendance was Village Trustee Donna Scales.

Minutes:   Minutes from the May 24, 2011 meeting were approved on a motion by Bob Swartz and second by Mike Vannoy.  Motion carried.

Public Forum: No one was in attendance

Old Business:  A review of the grand opening of Fletcher Park was given.  The grand opening was a success; all commissioners had received nothing but good reports from the community.  Problems that were addressed after the event were the restrooms issues, the addition of 220 outlets for events and an inclusion of an item in the contracts for rental of the facilities that ask that you only drive into the park to unload items, that you stay on the sidewalk and that you remove your vehicle after unloading.  Surveys have been sent out to the vendors as of today and I will report what the results were at the next meeting.  Small picnic pavilions will be installed within a week.  Trees will be planted between the open pavilion and the recreation center this fall. Items that the commission feel are still needed are more picnic tables and possibly more playground equipment.  The rental of the facilities was discussed.  At this time there is a large demand for the facilities.

The commissioners were brought up to date on the progress of the summer programs.  Numbers of participants are approximately what they were last year and there are several programs left for the summer.  Several craft classes have been held in the recreation center as well as the tennis courts in Fletcher Park.  Participants in Goodwin Park were in the 20’s in June but with the hot July weather the numbers are down to about 12 to 15.

Sidewalk projects under way right now is the one from Blakeridge to Westside and repair to sidewalks on Woodland.  Still on the list is the sidewalk from Sundance to the Glenwood on Baltimore.  Commissioners also ask to get the connection from Fletcher Park Blvd to the entrance to the park on the list to be completed.

New Business:  There was no new business

Non-agenda Items:

Commissioner’s Items:  JC Nashland would like to see about a photo contest in Fletcher Park.  He has seen a lot of nice photos of the park and thought that there might be a good opportunity for the community to visit Fletcher.  Commissioner Koester ask if we might have a photo class next summer and include a contest at that time.   I will try and get the Mt. Zion Chamber of the Mt. Zion EDC to help sponsor the contest so cash prizes can be awarded.

Commissioner Vannoy said that he has received several phone calls at Spitler Woods about the location of Fletcher Park and has referred people to us for rentals.

Adjournment:  The meeting was adjourned at 6:25 pm on a motion by JC Nashland and second by Bob Swartz.
