A Brief History of Del's Express Popcorn Shop
In 1934, The Popcorn Shop was opened by John Baldwin. He leased his business to Del & Emily Barnett in 1954. A year later, the Barnetts purchased the popcorn store and changed the name to Del's Popcorn Shop. Lou Ann Jacobs purchased the Decatur business in 1978 and expanded it to the Springfield community. 1984, Lou Ann's sister, purchased the Springfield location.
In May of 2002, Mike and Trudy Jacobs opend Del's Express Popcorn Shop, a retail outlet at J.J.'s Mobil gas station in Mt. Zion. They also expanded by placing point of purchase dispaly units in convenience stores, hospital cafeterias, and other retail establishments in central Illinois.
Mike & Trudy Jacobs opened the doors to their new location on August 3, 2007. There were "popping at the seams" at their small location in the gas station, so they jumped at the opportunity to make to the move to 100 Debby Drive, which was formally occupied by Judy's Kitchen. The new shop is much larger, so they have added to their selection of chocolates and candies for kids. Carmel apples, fudge, pralines, and peanut brittle will now be made right on sight. Soft drinks and sno-cones are also new to Del's. The famoud popcorn products made at Del's include, caramel corn, cheese corn, kettle korn, vanilla corn and caramel corn with nuts.
Del's offers discounts for those wishing to provide their products for school, community or sporting events. Their delicious caramel apples can be found at many area football games in the fall. Fundraising opportunities are also available. Woth the expanded location, they are also prepared to fill your gift-giving needs during the holidays. They package and ship gifts of good taste to your friends and business clients.
